Alameda-Contra Cost Transit District (AC Transit) has unveiled the first iteration of its zero-emission transit bus technology analysis (ZETBTA) study with hydrogen fuel cell buses achieving the highest total mileage. The study is a robust side-by-side evaluation of the predominant engine technologies in use at transit agencies worldwide comparing hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEB), battery electric (BEB), diesel hybrid and conventional diesel bus propulsion systems. The study, that ran from July 2020 to December 2020 in the San Francisco Bay area, found that the FCEB’s had the highest fleet mileage out of all other options at 112,233 miles.

As well as this, the FCEB fleet also achieved an average availability of 85%. This showcases the potential of utilising hydrogen fuel cell buses for transportation in the US.

The ZETBTA is an evolving open-source study evaluated by Stanford University’s Precourt Institute for Energy to create a scholarly reinforced roadmap to aid transit agencies in planning, procurement, training, and a guide to curtailing costly missteps toward zero-emission conversions.

Chris Peeples, Board Director at AC Transit, said, “Our Board of Directors began exploring zero-emission technologies two decades ago. “But we wanted much more than to report assumptions about metrics and formulas. “To successfully implement a zero-tailpipe emissions fleet, I felt it was critical to validate our findings. Stanford’s independent analysis offers transparency and accuracy for a roadmap the transit industry can now rely on.”
